The Pittsburgh Steelers head to Carolina to take on the Panthers as both teams close out their respective 2016 preseasons.
The Pittsburgh Steelers picked up their first win of the preseason defeating the New Orleans Saints 27-14 last Friday. Pittsburgh grabbed an early 21-7 halftime lead and never looked back the rest of the way. Starting QB Ben Roethlisberger completed 12 of 17 attempts for 148 yards and two first quarter touchdowns, while backup Landry Jones took over in the 2nd quarter and went an impressive 19-22 for 206 yards and a touchdown. LeVeon Bell led the Pittsburgh run game with 21 yards on 3 carries while the group as a whole ran for 75 yards on 23 attempts. Antonio Brown led the way for the Steelers in receiving as he usually does hauling in 4 balls for 87 yards and a 57-yard TD hookup from Big Ben halfway through the first quarter. The Pittsburgh defense had a strong showing heading into the final week, putting up a sack, two interceptions and forcing two fumbles on the anemic New Orleans offense and the Steelers hope to do the same to the Panthers on Thursday.

Speaking of the Panthers, Carolina dropped their second home game of the preseason, 19-17, to the visiting New England Patriots. Cam Newton saw the majority of the action for Carolina, going 13-29 for 100 yards and two picks. While some would argue that the QB who had the best game was third-stringer Joe Webb. Even though Webb only completed 6 of his 17 attempts, he threw for both of Carolina’s touchdowns, and didn’t throw a single interception, which isn’t something Newton or backup Derek Anderson can say. Starter Jonathan Stewart had 3 carries for 23 yards, but before you get excited, one of his rushes was for the whole 23 yards. The Panthers as a team rushed for 92 yards on 20 attempts, their highest output on the ground this entire preseason. Devin Funchess led the way for the Carolina receiving core, catching five passes for 49 yards. The Panthers defense had an active night despite the losing effort, registering two sacks and forcing two fumbles.
Pittsburgh is 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 games on grass and 7-3-2 ATS in their last 12 road games while the under is 4-0 in their last 4 games overall. Carolina is 19-7-1 ATS in their last 27 home games and 11-5 ATS in their last 16 games overall while the over is 6-1 in their last 7 home games. Pittsburgh is 6-0 ATS in the last 6 meetings of these two.
In the last week of the preseason, the starters will see barely action if any at all, meaning this game comes down to who has the better backups and in my mind that’s the Steelers.
Give me Pittsburgh and the points, even though I’m not sure we will need them.
