The Detroit Lions move into the post Calvin Johnson era with a season opening trek to Lucas Oil Stadium to face off against the Indianapolis Colts.

The Lions look to stay competitive in the NFC North this season as they will have to fend off two of the league’s top teams in the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings and while there are some question marks surrounding their depth chart they still have some very solid play makers. Matt Stafford is back behind center and will be out to prove he is among the league’s elite signal callers and while he is without his favourite weapon since he entered the league there are still plenty of options to work with led by Golden Tate. Detroit will balance out their running game with Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddick and brought in Marvin Jones to play second fiddle to Tate and if they can finally get Eric Ebron going this offense could be pretty solid. Defensively, the Lions bring back Ziggy Ansah and Haloti Ngata who will anchor the defensive line and if they can get their secondary in check they could prove to be a tough out on the schedule and that includes week one in Indy.

The Colts meanwhile look to get back into the playoff picture after an off year last year and with Andrew Luck looking to return to top flight and the receiving corps being quite strong there is certainly a chance for the Colts to get back into the discussion. TY Hilton, Donte Moncrief, and Phillip Dorsett will be leaned on through the air, Frank Gore on the ground, and Dwayne Allen in the red zone but their defense remains a big concern as they don’t like capable of stopping much and with a gunslinger like Stafford in this one I think it will be a shootout.

The Lions are 4-1 ATS in their last five games on turf, 6-2 ATS in their last eight games overall, and 9-4 ATS in their last 13 season openers while the Colts are 4-1 ATS in their last five on turf, 25-10-1 in their last 36 home games, and 1-7 ATS in their last eight season openers. This game is tough to call and one I will probably stay away from but with the Colts defense being the weakest unit out of the four in this game I think that can play a difference as Detroit stays close.
