After the quarter mark of the regular season we are starting to see some teams create separation and others who have been big time disappointments and last week was a big flop for our top plays, outside of Cincinnati. The Panthers and Cards are reeling right now and should be kept at bay and they may even find themselves in our top plays section but on the other side. For now, here are this week’s Top Plays, Pool Breakers, and Pool Makers:
USA TODAY Sports
New England Patriots at Cleveland Browns
Well. We did it. Deflate Gate is over, and that is an absolute nightmare for the rest of the NFL as Tom Brady makes his season debut this weekend and he will not be happy. The Patriots are coming off a 16-0 shutout home loss and now head into Cleveland to take on the hapless Browns in Brady’s debut against Bill Belichick’s old team? Uh oh. The Browns have been on auto fade but have surprised some teams with how well they have played, but after laying an egg to the Redskins last weekend they get the privilege of playing the Pats who will certainly be frustrated with how things went last week, and they get their leader back behind centre? This game will be over after the coin toss.
Green Bay Packers vs New York Giants
The Packers are coming off their bye week and while that has been a bad thing for this team in recent years as they seem to take a bit of a dive after their week off, I think it is a good for them here as they play on Sunday night at Lambeau against a struggling Giants side. Green Bay and Aaron Rodgers always seem to play much better when they’re at home and they get a Giants side that is coming off a Monday night defeat at the hands of the Minnesota Vikings who have been bruising everyone with their defense this season and once again exposed Odell Beckham who is having a woeful start to the year. Green Bay doesn’t have the defense that the Vikings have but they do have a much more explosive offense and coming off a bye week and getting the Giants on a short week I think is a no brainer here for the Packer
Denver Broncos vs Atlanta Falcons
The Falcons are coming off their third straight win with a dominating effort against the Carolina Panthers but they run into a freight train here against the defending Super Bowl champions. Atlanta has been able to move the ball at will and after last week’s effort from Matty Ice and Julio Jones you can be sure the Falcons offense will be playing with some confidence here at Mile High. The Broncos are undefeated, the offense is moving at will with Trevor Siemian at the helm, and their defense is as stout as ever and while Atlanta has a very strong offensive unit I think they are dealt a reality check here. Denver will knife apart the non existent Falcons defense as CJ Anderson should be in for a big day. Broncos stay undefeated.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Carolina Panthers
The defending NFC champions are in a tough spot after falling to 1-3 on the season and now they may be without Cam Newton who sustained a concussion against the Atlanta Falcons last week and the team had to resort to using Derek Anderson. The Bucs meanwhile have their own issues but they have a potent offense that should be able to move the ball if Jameis Winston can protect the football. The Panthers will be out to redeem themselves after last week’s defensive performance and you can be sure that Luke Keuchly will have his unit fired up, but I am not backing this Panthers team in any capacity right now until they can show they are the same team we saw a season ago.
Cincinnati Bengals at Dallas Cowboys
This game should go without saying as we have two very competitive teams going toe to toe at Jerry’s World and while the health of Dez Bryant remains a concern for the Cowboys they have been able to win football games and look like the favourites to win the NFC East alongside the Eagles. Cincy meanwhile is coming off a statement game against the Miami Dolphins and had their own wide receiver bust out for a big outing as AJ Green lit up the Dolphins secondary and he will be out for more here against the Cowboys. Dak Prescott has been great in his short stint as the team’s starting pivot but he will be in for a tough outing here against a strong Bengals defense and this game looks like a field goal game all the way. Best to stay away.
Indianapolis Colts vs Chicago Bears
The Colts return home after a disastrous outing in London against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but if not for some untimely turnovers they probably should have gotten the win against a motivated Jags side. Indy needs to do a better job of keeping Andrew Luck upright and that should come here against a Bears side that continues to lose key players with each passing week. Chicago did get a win at home last week against the Detroit Lions as they held Matt Stafford in check but they are in tough here as Luck, TY Hilton, and the rest of the Colts offense should be able to move the ball at will. Jordan Howard played well in his NFL debut and will be the feature back moving forward and if this one was in Chicago it probably wouldn’t be on this list, but the Colts are getting desperate and need a big outing at home in a final that should stretch more than a touchdown.
