2010 NFL Preview-St. Louis Rams2009 Results: 1-152010 Schedule:
Overview: The St. Louis Rams were horrible enough last season to get the first overall pick in the NFL Draft last season and this season may not be much better. The Rams cut ties with QB Marc Bulger and several other veterans and it is going to take some time to see exactly where this team is at and where they are going. Offense: Last season the offense was Steven Jackson and nothing else and this season that seems to be the same story. The Rams used the number one overall pick to take QB Sam Bradford who won the Heisman trophy two years ago but spent most of last season injured and as is usually the case with rookie QB's, he may be in for a rough go of it in the pocket if he cracks the starting lineup. Jackson was banged up last season as everyone knew he was getting the ball often. St. Louis took Mardy Gilyard in the draft and my guess is he was an absolute steal as he has proved he can catch and get open in big games. The Offensive Line is young which makes for rough going in the present but a bright future. Alex Barron is gone at Left Tackle to make room for last year's number two overall pick Jason Smith. Defense: Chris Long is going to need to play at a higher level than he has been or the bust tag is going to start to rear it's ugly head as he just doesn't produce at the level expected of a top five NFL Draft pick. Admittedly Long doesn't have a lot fo help on the DL but I did think getting George Selvie in the seventh round was a steal as many thought if he came out two years ago he would have been a top pick. James Laurinaitus proved the doubters wrong and showed he can play i the NFL as he was a tackling machine and once agaoin proves that some guys don't measure to the numbers but are just football players. Bobby Carpenter and Na'il Diggs were brought in to solidify the linebacking corps. Like most of this team, the secondary wasn't very good and will be trial and error as they try and get some of the rookies, Jermoe Murphy and Marquis Johnson, into the mix. Oshiomogho Atogwe is a capable Safety and probably the best of this not so stellar group. Special teams: Josh Brown didn't have his best year kicking and there could be competition in camp but the punting duties are set with Donnie Jones who is one of the best in the NFL. Danny Amendola handles the returns but he'll probably get some company this year in Gilyard. Prognosis: If the Rams draft anywhere outside of the top five I would be pretty surprised and I think it's more likely they will be in the one or two spot. I am not sold the Rams are heading in the right direction as Bradford comes from a program that hasn't produced great NFL QB's and the injuries have to be a concern.
