Overview:

It's a new era in Seattle as Pete Carroll takes over as Head Coach after Jim Mora Jr. was given only one year following a virtual legend in Mike Holmgren. Carroll built a powerful program at USC and was far better than he was as a Head Coach for the New England patriots and the New York Jets prior to taking the USC gig. The biggest difference for Carroll at this level is you can't recruit, somewhere he excelled at the college level.

Offense:

Matt Hasselbeck is aging and while he still has it, he was injured last season and when he was out the team just wasn't competitive. Seneca Wallace is out as the back up and Charlie Whitehurst is in and for the time being he may serve as their future. Julius Jones and Justin Forsett will probably share time at Running Back with Leon Washington being the third down guy. Seattle hopes second round pick Golden Tate can stretch the field as Wide Receiver as they have to capable WR's to handle to over the middle and sideline outs with T. J. Houshmanzadeh and Deon Branch. The Offensive Line will need some time as Walter Jones retired but I really like the Russell Okung pick in the draft and he's the type of player who starts day one and continues for the next 10 years plus. I think Max Unger also improves this season and with the new coaching staff, this unit will start to gel, it's just a matter of when.

Defense:

The Seahawks traded Darryl Tapp to Philadelphia for Chris Clemmons in a swap of Defensive Ends and I'm not convinced Seattle got the better end of that deal as Clemmons is lighter than most Linebackers. Patrick Kearney also retired and this is a unit that will need to rebuild. With Aaron Curry and Lofa Tatupu playing Linebacker, the Seahawks are all set barring another injury. Last year it was Tatupu who went down and it was devastating to the entire defense and stymied Curry's development. Marcus Trufant is the best of the secondary and Seattle used one of their first round picks to grab Safety Earl Thomas and used a fourth round pick to take Cornerback Walter Thurmond from Oregon.

Special Teams:

Olindo Mare has hit 21 field goals in a row and Jon Ryan is one of the best Punters in the NFL. Tate should figure in the return game.

Prognosis:

This year might be a challenge is Seattle and we might not really see the identity and future direction as it takes time for a total overhaul which is the true direction of this team right now. With good Linebackers it always helps but I'm not sure they have the running game to compete week in and week out.
