The Line: Colorado Avalanche / Anaheim Ducks --- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds

The Anaheim Ducks and Colorado Avalanche begin another season of NHL hockey when the teams clash at the Pepsi Center in Denver.

The Ducks were one of the heavy favourites heading into last season’s Stanley Cup playoffs after a remarkable regular season but after a premature exit had their dreams crushed in the opening round it was back to the drawing board for Bruce Boudreau and gang. Anaheim had a busy off season that was highlighted by a trade with the Senators that saw Bobby Ryan head to Ottawa while the Ducks acquired highly touted prospect Jakub Silfverberg in a move that makes sense for both teams. Anaheim will hope their acquisition will be able to come in and make an immediate difference as he joins an offensive arsenal that includes Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry, and the ageless Teemu Selanne making the Ducks one of the favourites in the Western Conference again this season. Goaltending was a huge part of the Ducks’ success last season as they had one of the best tandems in the league in Viktor Fasth and Jonas Hiller and those two will be relied upon heavily once again for the Ducks as they make a push towards the Cup finals.

Colorado Avalanche vs. Anaheim Ducks - 10/2/13

Kelvin Kuo-USA TODAY Sports

It’s a new era of hockey in Colorado as former Avs’ legends Patrick Roy and Joe Sakic take over the administrative duties as the former is the new bench boss while the latter is the director of hockey operations. The AVs also had the first overall selection in last year’s draft as they took Halifax Mooseheads forward Nathan Mackinnon who is a dynamic talent and one who should be on the active roster on opening night as he looks to make a difference in his rookie season.  However, there is a reason why the AVs had the first overall selection as they’re not a very deep team and goaltending and defense is a very big concern for the maroon and blue once again this season. They do have Paul Stastny, Gabriel Landeskog, and Matt Duchene up front but unfortunately against good teams it won’t be enough as they’ll know how to keep those guys in check. However, the atmosphere will be electric in Denver for this one and with the offensive talent both teams possess here I think the over is a solid play as both teams will be able to score and have question marks on defense. My play on the side can be found in the 1st Quarter Podcast but for my free play take the over.
