NHL Daily Updates: Key players from opening night
October 2, 2013
With the conclusion of last night’s three-game set, the 2013-14 NHL season is officially underway. We’ve already seen some interesting things out there on the ice, and we’re sure to see plenty more as the season progresses. Before tonight’s three-game schedule gets going, let’s take a closer look at some of the noteworthy players and storylines out there in the league right now. Here’s the latest.
Lars Eller, C, Montreal Canadiens: Eller posted a great statistical game in last night’s opener against Toronto, but it wasn’t enough. He managed an assist and a pair of goals in the 3-4 loss, going plus-2 in his 16:20 on the ice during the evening. It appears Eller is picking up right where he left off last season, when he posted 30 points in 46 games.
Next up for Montreal is a Saturday game at home against the Flyers.

Brandon Saad, LW, Chicago Blackhawks: Yesterday was an all-around good day for the Blackhawks. In addition to the joy of hanging their newest Stanley Cup championship banner in the rafters of the United Center, they also snagged an opening-night win over the visiting Capitals. Saad had a big statistical evening, with a goal and a pair of assists in the 6-4 win. He was only on the ice for 14:06 and had just the one shot on goal, so it was a very efficient performance for the second-year man. We’ll see if he continues his early development on Saturday when the Lightning come to town.
Mikhial Grabovski, C, Washington Capitals: Not to be outdone, Grabovski had quite a night himself. He posted a hat trick in the losing effort, tallying three goals and an assist for a stellar statistical opening to the season. Three of his four points came on the power play, and he showed some nice chemistry with Alex Ovechkin and Mike Green. We’ll see if Grabovski can continue his hot streak to open the season tomorrow night at home against Calgary.
Michael Frolik, C, Winnipeg Jets: Ex-Blackhawk Frolik came away with a memorable debut in his inaugural game as a Jet. He managed a pair of goals--scoring on both his shots--in a 5-4 opening-night win over the Oilers. Frolik’s second goal proved to be the game-winner. The Jets were down 4-2 at one point in this one, so they showed off some early-season tenacity in getting the victory.
The Jets will try to open the year at 2-0 when they welcome the Kings to town on Friday evening.
What to Watch Tonight: There are three games on the NHL set tonight, as the rest of the league continues to roll out their openers. Toronto will visit Philadelphia at 7:30 (ET); the Red Wings will host the Sabres at 8:00 PM (ET), and the late game features the Ducks visiting the Avalanche. The puck drops in that one at 9:30 PM (ET).
The proverbial floodgates will really open tomorrow night, as there are eight games on the schedule. We’ll keep you updated.
