Another year and another opportunity for everyone to write off the New Jersey Devils. It seems like every season it's the same thing and now everyone is pointing to the loss of Ilya Kovalchuk as the downfall for this franchise. Don't be surprised if that's not how things play out. This is a team that's going to have it's struggles but it's not as bad as everyone is making it out to be. They've got a lot of forward depth with the additions of Jaromir Jagr, Michael Ryder, Damien Brunner, and Ryne Clowe. Defensively they could have some struggles if some of their veteran players don't kick it up a notch but the addition of Cory Schneider will be a huge boost to this club. Marty Brodeur is aging but he's still got some gas left in the tank and with Schneider there this could be a strong point for the club.
They'll take on a Pittsburgh Penguins club that many people consider the class of the Eastern Conference yet again. Full seasons of Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby should produce dynamic offensive results. They've got a little bit of a worry on the blueline with the often injured Kris Letang starting the season on injured reserve, but this team is too good to let any one player affect them during the regular season. They should be a goal scoring machine yet again and one that puts up big numbers most nights. Marc-Andre Fleury will put up solid regular season numbers in front of this team like he always has, he'll just have to worry about the playoffs yet again.
