The Detroit Red Wings look to end Colorado’s unbeaten streak when the two teams meet in Denver Thursday night at the Pepsi Center.

The Red Wings have quietly pieced together a very solid start to the season as they’re sitting in 2nd place in the Atlantic division with a 5-2 mark and are victors of their last three games in a row. The Wings are a team many have pegged to come out of the East as the conference change and new additions have pundits drooling over Detroit and for good cause but there are a ton of other teams to watch out for in the Eastern Conference. Jimmy Howard should get the call for Detroit here after he was pulled from the Wings’ last game due to injury in which Jonas Gustavsson came in and played very well. Regardless of who is in net the Wings will need to play sound defensively as the Avs are on fire in the offensive zone and have so much team speed that could play a factor in the outcome of this game.

Colorado Avalanche vs. Detroit Red Wings - 10/17/13

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

Colorado has easily been the biggest surprise in the league this season as they have raced out to a 6-0 start with impressive, resume building victories over some of the league’s best teams. Colorado is no stranger to starting the season well as they held an impressive road stretch a couple years ago and with some much talent coming in and out of this organization it is hard to fathom that this is one of the best teams to play in the city of Denver. Colorado is playing at home after a successful road trip but hosting the Red Wings isn’t the nicest present as the AVs know full well how talented Detroit is. While this rivalry has significantly dwindled over the past few years I expect both to be ready in full force here and I actually like Detroit here to end Colorado’s winning ways as there is no better medicine for a young team with tons of confidence than an experienced bunch who knows how to win.

Detroit Red Wings +114
