The shorthanded Hurricanes head into Colorado looking to put an end to the Avalanche’s winning ways in what should be an exciting game in Denver.

The Carolina Hurricanes were a team on the rise heading into last year’s shortened regular season but their Cup aspirations were derailed after star goaltender Cam Ward went down with an injury and it is déjà vu all over again for the Canes right now. After what was deemed a pretty successful start to the season the Canes suffered another blow as Ward has yet again been sidelined for 3-4 weeks which throws the Carolina goaltending situation into a state of limbo. Anton Khudobin will assume the starter’s role for the Canes and while he has been very sharp to start the season in his few relief appearances it is a totally separate context when you’re the everyday guy and Khudobin will find that out in a hurry.  The Canes do have some fire power with the likes of Jordan and Eric Staal, Jeff Skinner, and Alex Semin up front but their blue line could use some work and with the Avs having so much team speed this looks like a huge mismatch.

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

Colorado as we all know has stormed out of the gates this season to the tune of an 8-1 record and now play at the Pepsi Centre in front of an invigorated Denver hockey market against a Canes team in turmoil. The Avalanche are loaded up front with the likes of Matt Duchene, Gabriel Landeskog, Nathan Mackinnon, Paul Statsny, and PA Parenteau to name a few and as mentioned they are so fast in transition and with the puck that it takes that much extra to keep up for opponent’s. The Canes are not only short handed here without Ward they’re coming off a loss last night against the Wild which always takes a lot of you as they’re a physical, defense first type of team. While it seems like an obvious play there is nowhere to turn here as I think the Avs absolutely mangle the Hurricanes in this spot and I think the puck line is a very plausible outcome.
