TV:

Tonight’s five-game set should provide a pretty smooth transition into the NHL weekend. We’ve got all sorts of intriguing matchups coming our way in the next couple of days, so there will be no shortage of conversation topics to cover. With that in mind, here’s a look at some of the noteworthy names out there making news on the ice.

Craig Smith, C, Nashville Predators: Smith has been turning it on during the last few games, and it resulted in a nice outing last night. He posted two goals and an assist in a 4-2 win over Toronto, which gives him three scores and three helpers in the last three games. Also of note was Matt Cullen, who had a goal and three assists himself.
The Preds’ road trip is now finished, and they’ll head back home for a game against the Rangers tomorrow. After that, Phoenix comes to town on the 25th.

Matt Read, RW, Philadelphia Flyers: Read has been posting some decent statistical outings over the past several games. He notched another one last night against the Sabres, accounting for two of the Flyers’ four goals in a 4-1 victory. He now has six scores to go along with three assists on the season. Steve Downie also deserves mention, as he accounted for a pair of assists in the win.
Up next for the Flyers is a home game against the Islanders tomorrow. They’ll head to Florida early next week for games against the Panthers and Lightning.

Jonathan Toews, C, Chicago Blackhawks: Toews once again took the lead for the defending Stanley Cup champs, posting a big game last night against the Jets. He managed a goal and three assists in the 6-3 victory, which gives him a total of 11 scores and 12 helpers on the year. Also contributing to the cause was Marian Hossa, who notched a goal and an assist of his own.
That was the second game of the Blackhawks’ lengthy road trip, and it continues tomorrow night in Vancouver. After that it’s off to Edmonton on Monday.

Ryan O’Reilly, C, Colorado Avalanche: One of the more dramatic games on last night’s schedule was the Avalanche’s 4-3 overtime win in Phoenix. O’Reilly tallied the decisive score, which was his ninth goal of the season to go along with seven assists. He’s scored six times in the last nine games. Goalie Semyon Varlamov was a busy man in the win, posting a total of 44 saves in the victory.
Looking ahead, the Avs will head to L.A. for a game tomorrow, then they’ll be back home to host the Blues on Wednesday.
