Playing their second consecutive game against one of the elite powers in the Western Conference, the San Jose Sharks came out on home ice and showed why they might be the best of them all. A few nights removed from a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings the Sharks came out with a bang on Friday, scoring four times in the opening period on their way to a rout of the St. Louis Blues. Brent Burns got things started just 36 seconds into the opening period and it was the start of a big night for him. Joe Thornton scored to make it 2-0 San Jose before Burns added another goal and Tommy Wingels scored. The Blues would make it interesting with three straight goals but just a minute after St. Louis cut the lead to one it was Burns sticking in the dagger as he recoded the hat trick. Tomas Hertl scored his 13th of the season into an empty net as the Sharks held on for the 6-3 win. Antti Niemi made 21 saves to record his 14th win of the season. Now the Sharks finish up this rough stretch when the Ducks come to town on Saturday night. Anaheim has won three of their last four games and are comin off a strong outing at home against the Calgary Flames on Friday night. Sami Vatanen and Corey Perry scored first period goals, Dustin Penner and Andrew Cogliano added goals in the second, and Penner finished the scoring with his second of the night and ninth of the season in the third as the Ducks rolled 5-2. The win improves Anaheim's record to 18-7-3 on the year, second only in the Pacific Division behind the Sharks. These two teams don't like each other at all and when you add in the fact that these are two of the top teams in the NHL you get a game that's can't miss on Saturday night. The Sharks have been the better team by a slight margin this season and they're playing at home, but the number warrants a close look at the visiting Ducks in this one.
