Buffalo Sabres vs. New York Rangers - 12/5/13

New York Rangers (14-14-0) at Buffalo Sabres (6-20-2)

NHL Hockey: Thursday, December 5, 2013 at 7:00 pm (First Niagara Center)

The Line: Buffalo Sabres +162 / New York Rangers -178 --- Over/Under: 5 See the Latest Odds

it was a busy off day on Wednesday for the New York Rangers who announced the signing of star goaltender Henrik Lundqvist to a seven year, $59 million extension. The contract will likely keep Lundqvist in New York for the remainder of his career, and it's a deal that the Rangers hope they don't regret on the back end. For this year's club the time is now for Lundqvist to find his game which has been well below the standard he has set for himself during the course of his career. The ups and downs of Lundqvist's play this season has mirrored the team which stands at 14-14-0 this season. New York was riding backup goalie Cam Talbot off his hot start but the luster wore off on Monday night when Talbot allowed four goals, two coming in the third period after New York had tied the game, as the Rangers lost to the Winnipeg Jets by a score of 5-2. After Thursday night's meeting with the Buffalo Sabres the Rangers will have nine straight games at Madison Square Garden, so the time is now for this club to get over the .500 mark for good. The losses continue to pile up for the Sabres and Saturday night's til in New Jersey wasn't any fun for Jhonas Enroth. The backup netminder stopped the first 23 shots he faced before finally surrendering a goal in overtime as the Sabres lost to the Devils 1-0. Buffalo generated just 15 shots on goal against New Jersey, a number that isn't going to cut it against any opponent in the NHL. At 6-20-1 the fans in Buffalo are already wishing this season would end, but it's still got four months left until they're put out of their misery. The most interesting thinga bout this hockey club moving forward is going to be what happens with Ryan Miller and what the Sabres are able to get back if they do move him. With the contract out of his mind Lundqvist might finally get back to playing his type of hockey and if it starts tomorrow that isn't a good thing for the Sabres.
