The Philadelphia Flyers return home from a dreadful effort last night in Chicago as they host the red hot Montreal Canadiens on Thursday night.

The Canadiens are coming off their worst effort of the season in which they were pasted by the visiting LA Kings by a 6-0 mark on Tuesday night but get an opportunity at redemption tonight in Philadelphia. Until Tuesday night’s melt down the Canadiens were one of the hottest teams in the league posting a 9-0-1 mark in their previous 10 contests and they have been quite strong on the road this season posting an 8-4-1 mark outside of Montreal this season. Montreal has received a balance scoring attack all season and will look for another distributed effort against a Flyers team who has been underachieving for over a year and can’t seem to get on any sort of winning track. Carey Price will get the call for the Habs after he was pulled at home against the Kings and he will look for a bounce back effort against Steve Mason who came in in relief of Ray Emery last night.

Jean-Yves Ahern-USA TODAY Sports

The Flyers are a mess and while the scapegoat in Philly continues to be the goaltending situation you can hardly blame their futility on the play in the crease, last night excluded. The bottom line remains that Philly’s top end players haven’t been producing and the supporting cast that was deemed superb enough to let all stars Mike Richards and Jeff Carter walk hasn’t been able to fill the void. Philadelphia was a playoff team the season they left and played the Penguins in what was one of the most exciting playoff series’ hockey fans have seen in some time but since then they have been a doormat and this year appears to be no different. I have absolutely no idea why the Flyers are favourites in this spot as they’re mediocre at best on a good night and have a .500 record at home plus are in the back end of a double header in which they were waxed in the first leg. Take Montreal and move on.
