A losing streak that lasted the entire month of December is finally over for the New York Islanders. The Islanders won for the first time this month when they defeated the San Jose Sharks 3-2 in a shootout on Tuesday night. Trailing 2-0 after two periods of play the Islanders didn't quitting, getting an openin minute goal in the third from Thomas Vanek to cut the lead in half. It would take until the final two minutes of the period for the Islanders to tie it but they did just that on Kyle Okposo's ninth goal of the season. Kevin Poulin stopped three of the four shooters he faced to pick up his fourth win of the year. Okposo scored the game winner in the fourth round. Despite all the losses this Islanders club hasn't quit on head coach Jack Capuano. It has been a strange time for the Islanders because the expectations have grown and the club has been an absolute mess lately, but New York plays hard most of the time. These Islanders just aren't talented enough on most nights. On Thursday, they'll head into Phoenix to take on the 17-8-5, but somehow fifth in the Pacific Division, Coyotes.
The Coyotes have hit a bit of a rut this month after an excellent start to the season. Tuesday night the Coyotes snapped a two game losing streak with a 3-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche. Antoine Vermette scored twice in a three goal second period that proved to be the difference for Phoenix. Thomas Greiss improved to 4-2-0 on the year. The Coyotes are the better hockey club and while I like them at home in this match up I just don't like the price.
