The Capitals and Hurricanes renew hostilities as these former Southeast division rivals meet up in Raleigh on Friday night.

The Capitals sit in second place in the Metropolitan division but have a ways to go to catch the division leading Penguins who have the biggest edge over their divisional foes in the entire league as they are 14 points better than the Caps. Despite coming off a loss the Caps have won 6 of their last 10 contests and hold a three point edge over the surging Philadelphia Flyers in the divisional race and can distance themselves with a big road win against the Canes. Washington has paired its team success with the individual success of captain Alex Ovechkin who leads the league in goals scored and if the Russian sniper continues this pace you can bet he will be a shoe in for at least a nomination for another MVP award. Braden Holtby will get the call tonight for the Caps while the Canes counter with Cam Ward as both try to play their way onto the Canadian National team.

Carolina Hurricanes vs. Washington Capitals - 12/20/13

The Hurricanes have been up and down this season but seem to be ascending at the right moment as they have points in 7 of 10 games and have moved above the .500 mark which is good enough for 4th in the Metro division. Carolina sits just four points back of the Capitals heading into tonight’s action but they need to address their paltry goal differential as they sit with a -15 mark through 34 contests which is a league worst for team’s sitting above .500. Cam Ward continues to be the team’s best option in goal but his injury concerns have derailed any consistency the Canes would like to develop as last season was a debacle and so far this year things haven’t been much better. However, I do like them in this spot at home as I think they’ll be at the top of their game with the Caps in town and I think the Canes have a little more depth up front than the Caps do and have the better goalie.
