FInally the losing streak is over for the Detroit Red Wings but it didn't come easily against the Calgary Flames on Thursday night against the Calgary Flames. Daniel Alfredsson was the hero on the night, opening the scoring with his eighth goal of the season before winning it in overtime. Joakim Andersson also scored for the Red Wings who blew two different one goal leads before Alfredsson saved them in the extra session. Jonas Gustavsson has played very well in his starts and he was solid again in this one, stopping 20 of the 22 shots he faced to move his record to 9-3-2 on the year. Perhaps Gustavsson gets some more starts for a club that is looking for consistency right now. Their opponent on Saturday night hasn't had much success lately either, losing five of their last seven games heading into this one. The Toronto Maple Leafs had lost consecutive games in which they scored just two total goals heading into their meeting with the Phoenix Coyotes on Thursday. The Maple Leafs weren't able to solve their goal scoring problem but they manage to pick up two points on the night. Troy Brodie scored his first goal of the year late in the first period but it was the only time in the game the Maple Leafs would find the back of the net. The game remained tied until late in the third period when the Coyotes would score the equalizer. After allowing a Mikkel Boedker goal in the shootout James Reimer rebounded and stopped the next two shooters he faced to secure the 2-1 win. Both of these hockey clubs are middle of the road right now and it's hard to see either one doing much as the season goes along if they don't make some changes. With the way the Maple Leafs have played lately it's hard to see them breaking out offensively in this one. Detroit has been a better hockey club on the road this year but finally snapping that losing streak with a one goal win over a bad Flames club isn't exactly the type of thing to look for if you're trying to back a team.
