Two of the best in the west meet up in Chicago as the Avalanche look for the upset at the United Center.
The Avalanche raced out of the gates as one of the best teams to start the 2013 season and now with the first half of the year over and done with Patrick Roy’s team will shift its focus on making a playoff run. The Avs finished with one of the worst records in hockey last year and as such were awarded the top selection in last July’s entry draft where they selected Nathan Mackinnon who will certainly be a franchise shaping forward in the coming years. However, the Avs weren’t a bad team last year they just fell on hard times and could never turn the corner but it wasn’t for a lack of talent and now this season they have reached that potential will adding a cornerstone piece in Mackinnon and bringing in a hall of famer to be the new bench boss. The Avalanche sit in third in the Central division at the half way point and they’ll look to put a dent in the nine point deficit they face for the division lead which so happens to be occupied by tonight’s opponent, the Chicago Blackhawks.

Chicago has been business as usual this year as last season’s President’s Trophy and Stanley Cup winners currently possess the game’s second best record sitting a single point back of the Anaheim Ducks. Chicago has the majority of their pieces back from last year’s banner season and while they did lose some role players they simply reloaded and have a great chance to repeat as Cup champions. It has been public knowledge that Patrick Kane is a special talent but this year he has taken things up a notch as he is having a Hart Trophy type season and his torrid scoring pace is set to be a personal best for the former London Knights sniper. The Hawks are pretty heavy favourites against a team that matches up quite well against them in terms of overall team speed but I think the home crowd and the depth of the Hawks will be the determining factor here in what should be a victory for the Hawks. Play Chicago in regulation for a nice payer.
