The Line: Buffalo Sabres -110 / Carolina Hurricanes +100 --- Over/Under: 5 See the Latest Odds

The Hurricanes look for their fifth win in a row as they head to Buffalo to take on the basement dwelling Sabres.

Carolina is a team many had pegged to do some damage in the playoffs a year ago but after a let down season that resulted in missing the postseason expectations came back down to Earth heading into 2013. The Canes struggled early once again this year as Cam Ward went down with another injury but he has rallied as have the Hurricanes who are one of the hottest teams in the league right now. Carolina heads into Buffalo riding a four game winning streak which has propelled them to within a single point of the Flyers and Capitals for second place in the Metropolitan division. Justin Peters has been one of the best backups in the league this season and he is likely to get another start here against the Sabres as he battles US Olympian Ryan Miller in what should be a pretty exciting contest considering the two participants.

Buffalo Sabres vs. Carolina Hurricanes - 1/7/14

James Guillory-USA TODAY Sports

The Sabres are far and away the league’s worst team this season as they have just 12 wins to their name through 42 contests and are nine points clear of the Islanders for last spot in the Eastern Conference and four of the Oilers for the worst mark in the league. The Sabres have gone through a tumultuous couple seasons as they brought in new ownership with loose purse strings that saw the club go on a spending spree only to fall short of expectations and clean house less than a year later. With the likes of Lindy Ruff, Darcy Regier, and Thomas Vanek out of the organization and Ryan Miller likely next to go it is clear the direction the Sabres are moving in and with the success of their prospects garnering international recognition at the past World Junior Championships the future is certainly bright in Buffalo. However, the present is quite cloudy and will be for the rest of the year and while the Sabres have a shot to upend the Canes here I think the smarter play is on the under as both goalies are playing well and both offenses are quite weak.
