The Maple Leafs looks to start a new winning streak on Tuesday as they head to the TD Garden to take on their hated rivals from Boston.

The Leafs snapped a four game losing streak in their last outing as they were badly outshot once again but they held on for a shootout victory which at the rate they were going is certainly one they will take and build on. Toronto is a team that came into the season with huge expectations after the way thigns ended for them last year and while the middle stanza of the season isn’t quite how management envisioned they’d play out they certainly have time to right the ship. The Buds return to the scene of the crime tonight as they head into the TD Garden to take on the Atlantic division leading Bruins in what should be a very exciting contest between two teams who hate each other. Phil Kessel is always the centre of attention playing in Boston as the former Bruins forward was the focal point of a massive trade between the two teams a number of years back and while Tyler Seguin, who ended up being the focal point going the other way, has left Boston I’m sure the fans will still give Kessel a raucous ovation.

Boston Bruins vs. Toronto Maple Leafs - 1/14/14

Tom Szczerbowski-USA TODAY Sport

The Bruins have been business as usual this season as the perennial Eastern Conference powers sit atop the Atlantic division and have been there since the puck dropped in October. However, the Lightning and Canadiens are fast on Boston’s heels and if they’re going to compete for the top spot in the conference they have to start playing better away from home as they’re just a single game above .500 when playing outside of Massachusetts. Boston is a very physical team and has a done of offensive depth but they seem to be without the same sense of dominance that we saw a season ago and come playoff time I’m not entirely sold on the product they’re putting on the ice. Patrice Bergeron, Milan Lucic, and David Krejci have all played decently for the black and yellow but it is the unknown Reilly Smith who leads the team in goals with 15 and while it is great that there is offensive balance there hasn’t been anyone who has taken over games like the other top ends teams have. Either way the Bruins are still atop the division until proven otherwise and with their record at home being what it is it is tough to go against them here. Boston is a big favourite and this game will be pretty close but ultimately I think the Bruins come out on top.
