The Penguins and Capitals meet up in Pittsburgh on Wednesday night as two of the game’s posters square off at the Consol Energy Centre.
The Capitals were highly anticipated to enjoy much success this season as they were one of the hottest teams in the second half of last year and while their playoff bid fell short they certainly had the pieces in place to do well this season. While they sit in second place in the Metropolitan division they certainly aren’t putting any pressure on their opponent’s tonight as the Penguins have a commanding 16 point edge in the Metro division title race and with the way they’re playing they certainly won’t relinquish that crown. Washington is led of course by Alex Ovechkin and while he won the Hart Trophy last season he seems to have fallen a step behind Sidney Crosby in the debate for the best player in the world. Ovechkin will look for vengeance here tonight but to be honest I think his focus is more on the Sochi Olympics in his native Russia as he would love nothing more than to win Olympic gold, even more so than winning the Stanley Cup.

The Penguins head into tonight’s contest with a very comfortable lead in the Metropolitan division and for a collection of teams that were expected to be Eastern Conference contenders only Pittsburgh has held up their end of the bargain. The Pens are a loaded team that will certainly challenge the Ducks and the rest of the Western Conference powers for top spot in the league and to me are hands down the favourite to come out of the Eastern Conference and play for the Stanley Cup. Pittsburgh is the most complete team that has great skill at every position and the others in the East including Boston, Tampa Bay, Detroit, and Montreal all have serious flaws in their lineup. Pittsburgh has a great shot to further cement themselves as the class of the East with a win against their rivals from DC and with the Caps playing last night I expect they will be drained after losing an overtime battle to the Sharks. This is a bad spot all around for the Caps as I think Crosby and the gang make quick work and take this one with ease.
