Boston Bruins vs. Vancouver Canucks - 2/4/14

Vancouver Canucks (27-20-9) at Boston Bruins (35-16-3)

NHL Hockey: Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at 7:00 pm (TD Garden)

The Line: Boston Bruins -186 / Vancouver Canucks +169 --- Over/Under: 5 See the Latest Odds

The Canucks look to shake off a shutout loss in Detroit last night as they head from the Motor City to Bean Town to take on their rivals from Boston.

The Canucks welcomed back suspended head coach John Tortorella last night in a losing effort as the Canucks dropped a 2-0 decision to the improving Detroit Red Wings but have no time to reflect as they head to Boston tonight to take on the Bruins. Vancouver went 2-4-0 with their bench boss suspended for his conduct and involvement in the line brawl with the Calgary Flames two weeks ago and while the team was surely excited to have him back in the dressing room unfortunately they couldn’t produce offensively and as such they have dropped four straight contests. The Canucks’ losing ways has them just a single point up on the Coyotes for the third automatic entry in the Pacific division and with the big, bad Bruins on tap things don’t get much easier here although they do get Roberto Luongo back between the pipes. This is one of the nastier rivalries in the game that started a few years back when the team’s met in the Cup finals and while some key participants are on longer involved there is still a lot of venom produced.

Anne-Marie Sorvin-USA TODAY Spor

The Bruins will look to pad their division lead over the surging Tampa Bay Lightning and Toronto Maple Leafs with a victory here that would see the B’s grab a six point edge over the Bolts and a nine point edge over the Buds if both of them drop Tuesday night decisions. Boston has the look of an Eastern Conference champion once again as they have a very deep roster up front, a blue line that plays with an edge and can contribute offensively, and an “emerging” goalie in Tuukka Rask who I put in quotations as he is still a young goaltender but has a ton of experience to his name already. Boston will certainly be prepared for the Canucks in this spot and to be honest I think Vancouver treated last night contest as a preparation game for tonight and as such were tied to a massive let down and didn’t play the way they should have. The Bruins are way too heavy a favourite here and while they are certainly the better team I think this one will be as hard as they come and will be very physical. Add in the fact that Luongo is starting and they’re playing in a back to back and I don’t see any way this game goes over the total.
