The Senators look for a better fate on Tuesday night as they dropped a heartbreaker in Pittsburgh last night when they head in St. Louis to face the Blues.

Despite a tough loss to the Eastern Conference leading Penguins in Pittsburgh last night the Ottawa Senators still recorded a point and are keeping stride with the rest of the Eastern Conference contenders for the final two playoff spots. The overtime loss gave the Sens a single point bringing them up to 59 on the season and while they’re seven points back of their rivals from Toronto for the third automatic spot in the division they are in the mix for the wild card spots as they trail the Red Wings by just three points. Craig Anderson was sensational in a losing effort as he recorded 40 or more saves for the third time this season and he alone deserved a better fate but equal to the task was Marc-Andre Fleury in the Pittsburgh crease as he put on a clinic with a couple of highlight reel saves. Robin Lehner will get a crack at getting back into the win column here but faces a stiff test in the form of the St. Louis Blues who are very tough to beat on any night let alone with a day’s rest playing at home.

St. Louis Blues vs. Ottawa Senators - 2/4/14

USA TODAY Sports

The Blues are a team that has been on the rise each of the last three seasons and have grown into a Western Conference powerhouse over that time period but despite all of their regular season success they have to find postseason rewards and as such they won’t be considered an elite team until they can prove they can. The Blues are a very well rounded team as they have a tandem of solid goaltenders, a young blue line that has a ton of talent both offensively and defensively, and a deep forward unit that may not have the superstar name or have someone in the top 10 in jersey sales but they’re a gritty bunch that plays like a team. St. Louis is definitely going to be a force come playoff time but it’ll be interesting to see what they do at the trade deadline as it has been rumored they will try to upgrade in goal with a possible Ryan Miller acquisition but the price tag will be steep that will likely require a first round draft pick plus big body forward Chris Stewart. Until that time however the Blues will continue to plug away and to me this is a horrible spot for Ottawa as they’re coming off a deflating loss that they probably should have won and catch one of the best home teams in the league with a day’s rest. Take the Blues.
