Two teams trying to secure a playoff spot in the crowded Eastern Conference playoff race will meet Thursday night as the Winnipeg Jets visit the Washington Capitals.
The Winnipeg Jets have won nine of eleven games since new coach Paul Maurice took over the reigns. The Jets have won three straight games and four of the last five. Thursday’s game will be the third of a four game road trip for Winnipeg, with 2-1 wins in each of the first two games. In the most recent game, the Jets took a 1-0 lead over the Carolina Hurricanes in the second period on a goal by Andrew Ladd, his 13th of the season. The Hurricanes would tie it up at one early in the third, but a goal by Chris Thorburn with about a minute left in regulation sealed the win for the Jets.

The Washington Capitals are spiraling out of control and out of contention in the East. The Caps are just 3-6-1 in the last ten games and have lost 15 out of the last 21 games overall. Suddenly, Washington finds itself on the fence in the Eastern Conference playoff race. On Tuesday, the Caps fell to the New York Islanders 1-0 at the Verizon Center in Washington. With two games remaining in the current home stand, including Thursday’s contest, the Capitals will certainly be playing with urgency and purpose in an attempt to solidify a home winning stint.
These two teams met earlier in the season, which resulted in a 5-4 Washington victory in a shootout. The Jets are winless in the last five contests with the Caps, but the road team is 6-1 in the last seven meetings. However, the Jets are just 4-11 in the last 15 meetings in Washington. With the Caps playing so poorly of late and the surging Jets skating so well at the moment, I think this is a descent spot to take a flyer on the road dog. It is not my favorite play on the Thursday NHL card by any means, but I lean to a play on the Jets in this game.
