NHL Daily Updates: Checking in on Trade Rumors, Tomorrow Night's Schedule and More
February 24, 2014
We’ve got just one more day to wait until the NHL kicks back into gear after the long Olympic break. In the meantime, there are plenty of noteworthy players out there making headlines, so with that in mind let’s take our daily look around the league and see what’s happening out there. Here’s the latest.
Martin St. Louis, RW, Tampa Bay Lightning: ‘Tis the season to get into some trade talk, and the rumors are flying surrounding St. Louis. There’s a report out there that says he asked the Lightning for a trade prior to the Olympic games, and the team was rumored to be targeting Ryan Callahan of the Rangers.
That said, Tampa Bay is said to have cooled on the idea of moving St. Louis now that the Olympics are over, so we may not see him get traded after all. Whatever happens, this situation is fluid and we’ll keep you posted.

Rangers Potential Moves: While we’re on the subject of trades, let’s take a look at the aforementioned Rangers. Callahan is reportedly a piece they’d like to move before the deadline, as is defenseman Dan Girardi.
We haven’t heard anything concrete coming from sources close to the team, but the moves would make sense. Both players would be rentals for another squad, however with a trade the Rangers could get assets for them in return instead of watching them walk away at season’s end.
Semyon Varlamov, G, Colorado Avalanche: We’ve got a bit of an update this morning concerning Varlamov’s post-Olympics status, so let’s check in on him and see what’s happening. The good news is that he’s set to return to practice with the team today, but isn’t expected to start Wednesday against the Kings (it’ll be Jean-Sebastien Giguere).
That said, the feeling is that Varlamov will be able to get back into the groove this week and hit the ice on Friday against Phoenix.
Logan Couture, C, San Jose Sharks: We’ll finish up today by taking a look at Couture and his injury status. It’s been a while since we’ve seen him out on the ice--January 5 to be exact--but we won’t have to wait much longer.
Couture says he’s ready to go, which would indicate that he’s set to return following his hand surgery. We fully expect to see him on Thursday in Philadelphia as the Sharks return from break.
Upcoming NHL Schedule: We won’t be seeing any NHL games until tomorrow--and most of the league won’t get back into action until the 27th. That said, here’s an advance look at the upcoming games when the league kicks back into gear, along with the start times and TV networks carrying each matchup.
