The Red Wings head into Ottawa on Thursday night as Daniel Alfredsson makes another return to his former stomping grounds.
The Red Wings were well represented in Sochi despite having an up and down season but part of the risk that comes with sending players to international tournaments is that players can and do get injured. The Wings are now without Henrik Zetterberg for the rest of the regular season and possibly into the playoffs if the Wings can get that far which is a huge blow as he is a big leader both on and off the ice. Detroit is playing in a back to back after visiting the Canadiens last night which at the moment has the visitors leading by a 1-0 score line and if they can hang on it would be a huge confidence booster for the team who could definitely use some. Detroit has a ton of veteran talent but their youngsters are getting more playing time of late which could indicate a changing of the guard for the Wings who have been identified with the same core group for what seems like the last decade.

The Senators have had a bit of a disappointing campaign considering the expectations they had coming into the season but with a shade over 20 games remaining on their schedule there is still time to salvage the year. The Sens sit just a single point back of their Thursday night opponents for the final playoff spot in the East and are seven back of the Canadiens for the third automatic berth in the Atlantic so they are certainly within striking distance and they have the personnel to sneak in. It did take some time for the Sens to move past the Alfredsson era and while they still may not have fully moved on they will have a shot at redemption here against their former captain who will be returning to Ottawa for the second time this season. While I think the Wings are the better team overall I think the loss of Zetterberg will certainly be felt sooner rather than later and I actually like the Senators at home in this spot.
