NHL Trade Updates: Potential Moves and Hot Topic Players Involved in Trade Talks Right Now
February 28, 2014
‘Tis the season to be talking about the NHL trade deadline (which looms large at 3:00 PM ET this Wednesday March 5), and as usual there are countless rumors out there involving a host of players who could be moved by the time the clock runs out. Let’s take a look at a few of those players now and try to make some sense of any potential deals. Here’s the latest news.
Ryan Miller, G, Buffalo Sabres: Miller is one of those players that’s been a non-stop cause for speculation and trade rumors, as his situation seemingly lends itself to a potential move. All of that hearsay may be in vain, however, as the latest reports have the Sabres supposedly talking about a contract extension with his camp.
Buffalo is trying to shed some salary and get younger on their roster, which is the potential source for all the rumors surrounding Miller. Still, if they do end up re-signing him before the trade deadline, it could be in an effort to deal him later on down the line when the team feels they could get more value for him. Regardless of how you look at it, it’s a fluid situation that’s not bound to slow down anytime soon. Tonight could be his final start in Buffalo.

Alexander Edler, D, Vancouver Canucks: Edler’s name has been making its way into trade rumors quite a bit lately, as there are multiple reports out there that have the Canucks pursuing their options in dealing him.
With his talent, Edler should demand a premium price on the market, but there’s a catch standing in the way of any potential trade. He (and a number of others on Vancouver’s roster) has a no-trade clause in his contract and could veto any deal he’s not comfortable with. That limits the Canucks’ options a bit, but some shrewd maneuvering could put them in a better spot than they were when they attempted to trade Edler ahead of the draft. He’s signed through the 2018-19 season.
Martin St. Louis, RW, Tampa Bay Lightning: The hockey world has been abuzz over the past couple of days after news broke that St. Louis had supposedly asked for a trade out of Tampa Bay before the Olympics began. That’s set into motion all sorts of speculation, including a very prevalent rumor that has St. Louis moving to the Rangers in exchange for Ryan Callahan.
It still sounds a little far-fetched, but it isn’t outside of the realm of possibility. A St. Louis-for-Callahan deal would be a blockbuster, but the chance remains that St. Louis might possibly feel differently after winning a gold medal in Sochi. (He was initially passed over for the Olympic roster.) Whatever the case, this will be a situation to watch as Wednesday draws closer.
Marian Gaborik, RW, Columbus Blue Jackets: Now that Gaborik has been activated from IR (he’s been out since Dec. 21 with a broken collarbone), the rumors surrounding him have intensified. The Jackets are reportedly mulling their options as far as trading him, and now that he’s healthy that could be a realistic consideration.
Columbus has also been mentioned as a potential trading partner in a Ryan Callahan deal--that is if he doesn’t re-sign in New York. As if that weren’t enough, they’ll probably also be players in the goalie market, as they may want to upgrade their backup net-minder position.
