The new look Sabres look to keep their modest winning streak intact as they travel to Dallas to take on a Stars team making a push for the playoffs.

The Sabres are in the midst of their worst season in franchise history and over the last 12 months they certainly haven’t been shy to clean house and the renovations continued over the weekend. It what was the worst kept secret in sports, the Sabres were looking to trade disgruntled yet talented goaltender Ryan Miller and after much speculation the team dealt Miller to the St. Louis Blues alongside veteran forward and captain Steve Ott. Buffalo yielded a pretty solid return for Miller and Ott as they received Jaroslav Halak, Chris Stewart, a prospect, and two draft picks in 2015 including a first rounder which is exactly the package the Sabres were looking for. Despite the future looking bright for Buffalo they are in a world of hurt for the rest of this season and they are likely to make even more moves before Wednesday’s trade deadline leaving them in a constant state of uncertainty and turmoil.

Dallas Stars vs. Buffalo Sabres - 3/3/14

Kevin Hoffman-USA TODAY Sports

Dallas meanwhile is in a completely different spot than their Monday night counterparts as they’re making a push towards the postseason and are in a logjam in the bottom of the Western Conference picture. The Stars were written off by many this year and weren’t expected to contend for much of anything due to their roster overhaul in the summer but they have certainly silenced their critics and are in a position to not only land in the postseason but to create some havoc along the way. I expect the Stars will make a move or two down the stretch to acquire some help for a playoff spot but with a rebuild still ongoing I don’t expect they will give up a ton of prospects or significant roster pieces so it might come via draft picks. This is a great spot for the Stars despite the Sabres winning three games in a row as Buffalo takes to the road and will have no idea who will or will not be in their starting lineup. I expect the Stars to feed off of the weaknesses of the Sabres and push themselves a little further away from the pack in the Western Conference.
