The Calgary Flames look to build off their win in Edmonton on Saturday night as they travel to Minnesota to take on the Wild.

If there was any team in the league that was disappointed in the timing of the Olympic break in Sochi it has to be the Calgary Flames. The Flames were playing their best hockey of the season before the `4-day layoff and while most of their roster remained in the Calgary area as their Olympians were few and far between it is still tough to stop a train when it is moving so fast. While a playoff berth is an incredible stretch for this team I think developing some confidence and momentum to close out the season would do wonders for the team’s psyche in the offseason and possibly attract some free agents to come to a budding organization. Calgary skated away from Edmonton with a 2-1 overtime win on Saturday night making it the seventh time in 10 games the Flames have notched two points and they can pull further away from their provincial rivals with a victory in Minnesota tonight.

Minnesota Wild vs. Calgary Flames - 3/3/14

Sergei Belski-USA TODAY Sports

The Wild are one of the hottest teams in the league at the moment having ripped off four straight victories which has them currently holding down the first wild card spot in the Western Conference. The Wild were a playoff team a year ago but were ousted in the first round by the eventual Cup champs from Chicago and while it was a learning process for the team they certainly had to have been disappointed with the outcome. Minnesota is starting to come along in their second season with a revamped roster that includes the presence of American Olympians Ryan Suter and Zach Parise. Minnesota is a team that will certainly be in the market for an upgrade between the pipes and with the ongoing saga in Vancouver, the bitterness in New Jersey, and the uncertainty in Carolina we could very well see Roberto Luongo, Martin Brodeur, or Cam Ward donning Minnesota colours later this week. As for the time being the Wild will have to ride Darcy Kuemper who has played quite well and in this spot I think the Wild make a statement to possible suitors that they’re going all in on this playoff push.
