For the second and final time during the regular season, the Colorado Avalanche and Detroit Red Wings will hit the ice on Thursday night. The Red Wings won the first meeting 4-2 back in October.
The Avalanche have won four of their last five games and are doing so with an incredible offensive performance. They’ve scored at least four goals in their last five games, including 10 in their last two games alone. Defenseman Tyson Barrie has scored two goals and racked up five assists in his last five games. Defensively, goalie Semyon Varlamov has allowed two or less goals in four of his last six starts. The Avalanche are 19-9-0-2 this season on the road.

The Red Wings have won four of their last six games, but are coming off a heartbreaking 4-3 road loss to the New Jersey Devils in which they allowed three goals in the third period. It was just the second time in six games where the Red Wings allowed more than one goal. Besides that one fluke performance, goalie Jimmy Howard has allowed 11 goals in his last five previous starts. Offensively, the Red Wings have scored 16 goals in their last five games. They are 11-11-3-5 at home this season.
While the Avalanche may be the better overall team this year, but the Red Wings are just one of those clubs that have owned them over the years. Not only have they won the last four meetings, but Colorado is just 1-4 in its last five games in Detroit. It’s also 17-37 in the last 54 meetings against Detroit.
The Red Wings have had their number for as long as I can remember.
Detroit has been consistently solid defensively as of late and should have enough to cool down the red hot shooting of Colorado.
