The Coyotes look to complete the Florida sweep as they head to Sunrise to take on the Panthers less than 24 hours after outlasting the Lightning in Tampa Bay.
The Coyotes’ fight to sneak into the playoffs took a turn to the positive last night as they went into Tampa Bay and upended the Lightning in a shootout to give them a pivotal second point that has them just a single point back of the Stars whose game was postponed last night. Phoenix has been a factor in the last two postseasons with their benchmark coming two years ago in the opening round in which they ousted the defending Cup champions from Chicago and made a run all the way to the Western Conference finals against the eventual Cup winners from Los Angeles. While this may not be the same team that went the distance they certainly still have some pieces with the most important one being Mike Smith who single handily took down the Hawks and gives the Coyotes a chance to win every night of the week.

The Panthers have had a tough go this season but I think management and players understood that was going to be the case as they have a lot of young players on the roster and will once again draft in the top five which should give them another great talent to add alongside Jonathan Huberdeau and Aleks Barkov. Florida re-acquired Roberto Luongo from the Canucks so their goaltending issues have been resolved for the foreseeable future and now they can focus on addressing some other holes on the roster, namely a top six forward and a top four blue liner to go alongside Dmitri Kulikov and Erik Gudbranson. Florida may not be a playoff team this year but they have played quite well at times this season especially at home against playoff contenders and I think this fits the bill once again. The Coyotes are playing in a back to back that went to a shootout last night against the Lightning and with Thomas Greiss likely getting the call for Phoenix I give the goaltending battle and the edge to the home team as a slight favourite
