NHL Hockey: Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at 10:00 pm (Scotiabank Saddledome)

The Line: Calgary Flames +148 / Anaheim Ducks -163 --- Over/Under: 5.5 See the Latest Odds

The Ducks look to shake off a loss to the Maple Leafs in their last outing as they head to Calgary to take on the Flames on Wednesday night.

The Anaheim Ducks have held the league’s top mark for the majority of the season as they have been red hot since the puck dropped back in October but have since relinquished the throne for the time being to the St. Louis Blues. The Ducks dropped a rare home outing in their last contest against the Maple Leafs in what was former coach Randy Carlyle’s return to the arena he led to a Cup title in 2007 but they can make amends by notching a crucial road win against the slumping Calgary Flames. Anaheim are heavy favourites on the road heading into this game in large part thanks to Jonas Hiller going back between the pipes after Frederik Andersen got the nod against the Leafs and Hiller has been brilliant all season long and should be considered for the Vezina Trophy. The Ducks remain in the lead in the Pacific division but the Sharks are coming fast and if Anaheim wants to secure at least the second seed they’ll have to close out the year in style.

Calgary has been a doormat for the past few seasons much like their provincial counterparts from Edmonton but unlike their archrivals the Flames look as though they’re heading in the right direction and have been a very scrappy team to play against this season. The Flames have some budding young talent that will be the infrastructure of their rebuild but one main concern remains their agenda between the pipes as Reto Berra was dealt at the deadline and Karri Ramo doesn’t appear to be a starting netminder for the future, at least in Calgary. I expect the Flames will made an addition in the offseason and ride things out here for the rest of the regular season meaning they’ll have to play solid defensive hockey if they want to stay competitive against the league’s top teams. This isn’t a great spot for Calgary as they have lost two straight and now get a Ducks team looking to shake off a loss and reclaim their spot at the top of the Western Conference. I think Anaheim takes this one with relative ease.
