The Hurricanes look to keep their faint playoff hopes alive as they host the lowly Buffalo Sabres in Raleigh on Thursday night.
The Sabres woeful season continues on the road in Carolina on Thursday as they play out the string on a disappointing campaign that will likely see them select first in the upcoming NHL entry draft. The Sabres have cleaned house on a number of occasions over the past two seasons in what was a shocking overhaul considering the free agent money the team spent once the new ownership group headed by Terry Pegula was introduced. Buffalo does have some bright days ahead as they have some youngsters in the junior leagues that will become focal points of their franchise moving forward and have some draft picks acquired at the trade deadline a couple weeks ago. However, the Sabres will have some long nights ahead of them for the rest of the season especially when they head on the road to play against some very desperate hockey teams.

The Hurricanes have been a disappointment as well over the last couple of years after they made some off ice moves that were supposed to push them over the edge but they have yet to make the postseason under the Staal Brother regime. Carolina heads into tonight’s contest sitting eight points back of the Flyers for the last spot in the Eastern Conference and while they have a relatively favourable schedule down the stretch I think it’ll be a case of too little too late. However, for tonight’s contest they are heavy favourites against a Sabres team that everyone has steam rolled this season and while I am not sold on the Canes as a whole I do like Anton Khudobin between the pipes moving forward as the former Bruins backup has really found his niche of late. The only way to play this game is to take Carolina on the puck line or as part of a parlay and I think Khudobin will do enough to allow the Canes to win by at least a pair.
