Colorado Avalanche (43-19-5) at Ottawa Senators (28-25-12)

NHL Hockey: Sunday, March 16, 2014 at 5:00 pm (Canadian Tire Centre)

The Line: Ottawa Senators +100 / Colorado Avalanche -110 --- Over/Under: 5.5 See the Latest Odds

The Avs and Senators meet up in Ottawa on Sunday as both teams look to shake off a loss in their last outing.

The Colorado Avalanche continue their improbable season on the road in Ottawa on Sunday as they look to chase down the Sharks for third spot in the West with a win over the struggling Senators. Colorado has been one of the league’s biggest surprises this season as they went from drafting Nathan Mackinnon first overall in the offseason to challenging for the President’s Trophy this season and a large part of that has to do with the overhaul in the front office with both Joe Sakic and Patrick Roy coming on board. The Avalanche have a very nice core of offensively gifted players up front that is the strength of their team but they do have some guys on the back end who are very solid ad Semyon Varlamov is enjoying a renaissance season in Denver at least on the ice anyways.  Colorado opens up as light favourites in this spot which I think will depend on how gets the call in goal for the Senators.

Ottawa Senators vs. Colorado Avalanche - 3/16/14

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

Ottawa is in desperation mode as they continue their push to make the playoffs and while they did earn a point last night in Montreal it may as well have been a regulation loss as they blew a three goal third period lead and lost in overtime by a 5-4 final. The meltdown was one of the worst I have ever seen in the NHL (aside from the Boston-Toronto fiasco last year that will go unmentioned) and while the Sens were justified in being upset at some bogus calls and non-calls in the late stages of that game they still have to find a way to close that out. Robin Lehner was hung out to dry at times but his fall from grace continues in Ottawa whether it is his fault or not and the trust and support of the young Swedish netminder looks like it is free falling. While the Senators are a gritty bunch and respond to adversity the bottom line is they haven’t played well continuously this season especially at home where they’re a very modest 13-12. I like Colorado to continue Ottawa’s home futility at a very nice price.
