The Flames look to continue Nashville’s woeful road trip as the teams meet up in Calgary on Friday night at the Saddledome.
The Predators continue their road trip in Calgary on Friday looking to distance themselves from the Flames in the Western Conference standings but at this point for both teams it is really only about pride as both will not be going to the playoffs. The Preds have struggled this season and while there were signs of life after the Olympic break and optimism remained high that they could salvage this season by locking up a playoff berth the bright lights have started to dim. Nashville does have a pretty solid blue line and Pekka Rinne is a very good goaltender who can steal a game for his team but Rinne’s injury concerns this season has plagued Nashville’s progression and as a result it looks like they’re going to come up short. The Preds will look to close out the season with some dignity and some momentum heading into next year and separating themselves from the Flames and Oilers is one way to do that.

The Flames meanwhile were expected to be where they are in the league standings as it was clear from the outset of the season that they were going to be rebuilding and looking towards the future as opposed to reloading with guys on expiring contracts. Calgary does have some great young talent that will go a long way in getting this team back into the good graces with the fan base but I think they still need to make a move between the pipes by acquiring one of the handful of available starting goaltenders in the offseason. Calgary has been playing much better of late and the Preds are deflated at the moment after getting thumped by the Oilers but I can’t buy into the Flames being a favourite against anyone at this point and while Joni Ortio has had a nice start to his career I think his countryman shows him a thing or two at the other end.
