The Canucks look for their fourth win in a row and second in as many nights on Thursday as they travel from Minnesota to Denver to take on the Avalanche.

Vancouver has had a very rocky and tumultuous season with all of the criticism surrounding their off ice decisions and on ice performance but they have certainly picked the right time to start playing their best hockey of the season and they demonstrated that last night against a very good team in Minnesota. Vancouver put up five goals against a stingy defensive team and held off a well balanced attack for two goals in what was one of their better games of the season and it provided new hope for a fan base who a couple of weeks ago was beginning to accept their absenteeism from the playoffs. The Canucks are starting to believe they can sneak into the playoffs and that is a dangerous thing for a team especially one who has been underachieving for most of the year and now with only four points separating them from a playoff spot you can expect the intensity to continue to grow.

The Avalanche have been one of the league’s biggest surprises this season and Patrick Roy is certainly in the mix for the Jack Adams Award as Coach of the Year but there is still work to be done. The Avs currently sit in fifth place in the West and trail the Blackhawks by three points for the fourth seed which would ultimately give the incumbent home ice advantage in the first round. You can’t knock this Avalanche team as they have come so far in one calendar year and are a lock to make the playoffs as well as claim some hardware at the NHL Awards but I am still skeptical that they are as good as their record indicates and that they have enough to upend the elite teams in the West. Semyon Varlamov gets the start here for the Avs and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Eddie Lack in goal for the Canucks as it is do or die time for them and while Vancouver is playing in a back to back I actually like them here as a heavy road dog as they match up quite well against the Avs and are believing in their system at the moment.
