NHL Injury Updates 4/1: Toews, Spezza and More
April 1, 2014
We’ve got a very heavy set of NHL action coming our way this evening, which makes this morning a great time to check out some of the injury situations happening around the league. We’ve got some big names dealing with various ailments right now, so let’s take a closer look at a few and see what we can determine from the latest news.
Jonathan Toews, C, Chicago Blackhawks: We’re still waiting on MRI results and specifics from Toews’ shoulder injury that he suffered on Sunday, but from most indications, it doesn’t appear to be a major cause for concern. The superstar left the Blackhawks’ game against Pittsburgh after taking a hard hit in the second and didn’t return.
Chicago coach Joel Quennville said after the game that he didn’t believe Toews’ condition to be too serious, but we’ll probably hear more in the meantime before their next game on Thursday. Keep those fingers crossed if you’re a fan.
Roberto Luongo, G, Florida Panthers: Here’s the bad news on Luongo. He’s not with the team on its current two-game road trip, which included last night’s tilt in New Jersey and tonight against the Isles in New York. That said, it sounds like a good possibility that he’ll be available for the team’s last five games at home.
Luongo is currently dealing with a neck injury, and the Panthers have no reason to rush him back into action before he’s ready. We imagine he’ll get some starts down the stretch so he can end the season on a good note. His next chance to come back is Friday against Calgary.
Matt Duchene, C/LW, Colorado Avalanche: Yesterday, we got an update on Duchene’s status, and while it’s not entirely bad news, it could have been a whole lot better. After sustaining a knee injury this past Saturday, he received some tests and it was determined that he’ll be missing around four weeks.
That means Duchene will be out for the rest of the regular season, and at least the first round of the playoffs. It’s obviously quite a blow to the Avs, who will be hard-pressed to replace his production. He’s got 70 points (23 goals; 47 assists) through 71 appearances this season.
Jason Spezza, C, Ottawa Senators: Spezza missed out on last night’s game against the Hurricanes thanks to his lower-body injury. It was sustained in Sunday’s victory over the Flames, so it’s a pretty new issue for him.
Spezza is considered day-to-day, so there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of concern here. His next chance to return would be tomorrow at home against the Islanders.
Nathan Horton, RW, Columbus Blue Jackets: The Blue Jackets don’t play until tonight, but they already ruled out Horton yesterday. He’s dealing with a lower-body injury, and though most are considering him day-to-day, we wouldn’t be surprised if he misses some additional games.
Horton has just 18 points (five goals; 13 assists) through 34 games so far, and has been troubled by injury this season, most notably his shoulder, which he recently admitted still gets sore after hits. He missed three months at the beginning of the year.
