NHL Daily Updates: Checking in on the Sharks, Stars, Tonight's TV Schedule and More
April 12, 2014
The NHL had a pretty busy schedule last night, and we’re following that up with another active outing today. There are nine matchups to look forward to in the coming hours, and the games will get started in the early afternoon. Before those pucks hit the ice, let’s take our daily look around the league and see what’s happening out there. Here’s the latest.
Alex Ovechkin, RW, Washington Capitals: The Caps have nothing to play for at this point, so it speaks to their resolve and commitment that they were able to come up with a convincing victory over the defending Stanley Cup champs last night. Ovechkin logged a goal and an assist in the 4-0 win, giving him 51 scores and 28 helpers on the season. Jay Beagle also scored twice, and Jaroslav Halak came up with a 34-save effort in the shutout.
The Capitals will be in action one more time this year--tomorrow afternoon against the Lightning.

Trevor Daley, D, Dallas Stars: The Stars have reason to celebrate this morning, as they’re officially headed to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2008. They clinched last night with a 3-0 win over the suddenly hapless Blues, with Daley logging a goal and an assist in the victory. Jamie Benn (two assists) and Kari Lehtonen (22-save shutout) were the other two stars from the game.
Tomorrow in Phoenix will mark the Stars’ final regular-season game, then they’ll get set for the playoffs.
Michael Frolik, RW, Winnipeg Jets: The Jets ended their season yesterday, and they did it on a high note. Frolik scored a goal in the eventual 5-3 win over the Flames, finding twine in the first period to start out the scoring. Defensively, Michael Hutchinson posted a pretty good outing, saving 35 on 38 shots.
The Jets will enter the off-season with a positive attitude as they build toward the future. They finish the year with a 37-34-10 mark.
Martin Havlat, RW, San Jose Sharks: Havlat was on fire last night--during the third period, anyway. He posted a natural hat trick with three goals in the single frame, helping the Sharks to a dominant 5-1 victory over the Avalanche. It was his sixth career hattie, and he also added an assist. Alex Stalock (33 saves) and Logan Couture (three assists) also posted nice lines.
The Sharks will finish up the regular season tonight in Phoenix.
