NHL Daily Updates: Checking in on the Canucks, Blackhawks, Tonight's TV Schedule and More
May 21, 2014
We’re coming off an empty evening in the 2014 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs, but the league will be getting back to business tonight as the Western Conference Finals pick back up again. Before that puck drops, let’s take our daily look around the league and check out some of the headlines going on right now.
Pascal Dupuis, RW, Pittsburgh Penguins: Good news for the Penguins when it comes to Dupuis. He’s scheduled to be back to full health by the time training camp rolls around, following an ACL tear in December.
Dupuis’ original timeline for recovery was 6-8 months, and getting him back by camp would put him right around the seven-month mark. As long as he continues to progress at a steady rate, he should be fine by then.

Andrew Shaw, C, Chicago Blackhawks: More good news on the injury front, this time out of Chicago. The Blackhawks’ Andrew Shaw practiced yesterday for the first time since Game 1 of the last round (he injured his leg in that one) and looks like he’s getting pretty close to being able to rejoin his teammates on the ice.
As of right now, most people are considering Shaw as day-to-day, and Coach Q will have to get another look at him before he can say if he’s ready for tonight or not. Even if he doesn’t suit up for this evening, he should make a return at some point during this series.
Canucks to Get New GM: According to a report that came out yesterday, the Vancouver Canucks will be naming a new general manager later this week, and that position will go to Jim Benning.
Benning is the assistant GM of the Boston Bruins, and has been there for the last eight years. He’s been all over the map during his playing days (drafted by Toronto in 1981) and has also worked with the Ducks and Sabres as a scout.
If the report is indeed accurate, Benning will be taking over for Mike Gillis, who got the boot last month. The first order of business after getting the GM position settled will be finding a new coach following John Tortorella’s stormy season at the reins. Barry Trotz is reportedly a coveted candidate, so we’ll see where that goes.
NHL Daily Schedule: Chicago and Los Angeles will be back at it tonight. Here’s a look at the schedule, along with the start time and TV networks carrying the game.
