NHL Daily Updates: Checking in on the Rangers-Kings, NHL Finals TV Schedule and More
June 3, 2014
The 2014 NHL Stanley Cup Finals begin tomorrow with Game 1 in Los Angeles. It should be a great series and will keep us all on edge as the games progress. While we’re waiting on that puck to drop, let’s take our daily look around the league and see what’s happening out there. Here’s the latest.
Rangers-Kings Outlook: We’ve still got another day to wait before the puck drops in Game 1 of the NHL Stanley Cup Finals, so in the meantime we can do some previewing and see what we should be looking for in this series.
First off, there’s some unfamiliarity on both sides: When these two teams last met, they were very different than what they look like now. They’ve only met two other times in the playoffs at all, once in 1982 and once in 1979, with the Rangers winning both of those series.
Both times L.A. and New York met this year in the regular season, the road team emerged victorious.
The dynamic between the teams this time will be very interesting to watch. The Rangers’ main strengths are their speed and defense, while L.A. relies more on depth and matchup plays. Both teams boast potentially dominant goalies: The Kings’ Jonathan Quick has had a couple of bumps in the road during these playoffs but has clamped down when needed, and New York’s Henrik Lundqvist is the cornerstone of not only their defense but their entire team. He bounced back beautifully after an ugly Game 5 against the Canadiens to post a shutout in their series-clinching victory in Game 6.
Both teams have played a ton of games in these playoffs so far (and the Kings have played every possible game up to this point), and we may get another lengthy series here. Fatigue may end up being a factor a few games in.

Alex Ovechkin, RW, Washington Capitals: In one of the most enduring (and potentially impacting) storylines to develop this off-season, Ovechkin suffered an injury to his right leg during the World Championships last month. The team released a statement early this week concerning his condition, saying that they expect him to be “completely healthy” for the beginning of training camp.
Even though his injury has been shrouded in mystery (it appeared to be a knee issue), Ovechkin seems like he’s got the all-clear for the time-being. He should be just fine for the 2014-15 campaign.
