The Staples Center and the Los Angeles Kings host the New York Rangers in the Stanley Cup opener on Wednesday.
The road to the Cup finals has been far from easy for New York with game seve wins over Philadelphia and Pittsburgh before knocking off Montreal in six games. To nobodies surprise the Rangers have gotten fantastic work from the blue line and goaltender Henrik Lundqvist who has posted a 2.03 GAA and .928 save percentage in 20 postseason games in 2014. Although the Blue Shirts wouldn't be where they are without Lundqvist the offense has provided some scoring punch as well. Martin St Louis is tied with Derek Stepan and Ryan McDonagh with 13 points. Breaking things down even further St Louis and Carl Hagelin have six goals apiece with seven forwards pumping in four goals with five lighting the lamp twice. The Team has also shown quite a bit of depth with four quality lines giving the team numerous options.
USA TODAY Sports
The Kings have been the most exciting team in the postseason as they won three game seven's on the road for the first time in history. They haven't made things easy for themselves as they rallied to beat San Jose by brushing aside a 3-0 deficit by winning four in a row and then watching Anaheim and Chicago come from behind in their series only to win the decisive game. The Kings have fallen behind and led games but never seem to lose their poise with adversity staring them in the face almost every time out. Jonathan Quick hasn't been the shutdown netminder the team leaned on during the regular season but he hasn't needed to be with the offense suddenly becoming nothing short of explosive. Marian Gaborik leads the playoffs with 12 goals with Jeff Carter recording nine markers. Tyler Toffoli and Justin Williams have scored seven times each as the Kings have become the highest scoring squad in 2014.
I am waiting for a line and my initial lean is Los Angeles but I expect them to be sizeable favorites and experience tells me that big chalk isn't always the best way to go. Please check back as I'll have a pick well before game time...
