NHL Daily Updates: Checking in on the Latest News, Off-Season Schedule and More
August 8, 2014
It’s been a relatively quiet week in the NHL--even for the off-season--but we’re still seeing a few noteworthy developments happening out there. With that in mind, let’s take our daily look around the league and see which players are making headlines right now. Here’s the latest.
Kings-Sharks Outdoor Game: This week, we got confirmation on what will be a very interesting installment of a developing rivalry out in California.
The Kings and Sharks will be playing outdoors for the second straight season in 2014-15, with a game coming on February 21 at 7 p.m. PT. The matchup will be at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, with San Jose serving as the home team.
The Kings and Sharks have gotten very familiar with each other recently. They’ve played 41 games together since the 2010-11 season, which is more than any other pair of teams in the NHL. Los Angeles rallied from an 0-3 deficit in the Western Conference First Round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs last season to eventually win the championship and leave the Sharks wondering what might have been.

Gonchar Update: Yesterday, we got some enlightening news on Stars defenseman Sergei Gonchar. Apparently, the team was actively seeking out a trade partner to try and deal him earlier this summer.
It’s really no surprise that Dallas is willing to dump Gonchar. His minutes were in steady decline throughout the year, and the team seems to be committed to giving their young guns a shot on that side of the ice.
Gonchar is 40 years old and carries a $5 million per year salary. Even though the Stars are reportedly willing to eat a large chunk of that, it seems no one is quite interested enough in the veteran. Look for his role to diminish even further in 2014-15 if Dallas can’t ship him out.
White Deal: The Flyers were active yesterday, inking C Ryan White to a one-year, two-way deal with the team.
White is coming off a fairly busy year with the Canadiens, playing in 52 games and posting six points (two goals; four assists) along the way. He’s a depth add, and will compete for a slot in the bottom couple of lines during training camp.
NHL Daily Schedule: The league action will be picking back up again on Wednesday, October 8. Let’s check out the schedule for that evening and see what we can expect on opening night.
