NHL Daily Updates: Checking in on the Latest News, Off-Season Schedule and More
August 18, 2014
It was a fairly active weekend for NHL news, especially considering that this is the off-season. We’ll likely be seeing quite a bit more developments in the coming week, so with that in mind let’s check out some of the current happenings around the league in our daily roundup. Here’s the latest.
Burmistrov Outlook: Although C Alex Burmistrov is currently playing in the KHL, the expectation is that he’ll be returning to the NHL. The Winnipeg Jets currently possess his rights, and with ex-coach Claude Noel now out of the picture (there was reportedly some friction between the two), the path is clear for a return.
We’ll have to wait until next summer to see exactly what Burmistrov’s plans are, but odds are good that he’ll be back in the states for the 2015-16 season.

Clarkson Update: Here’s an interesting thought: The Leafs’ David Clarkson is currently in Florida doing some training sessions with trainer Matt Belfry, and he’s joined by some pretty elite company.
Sidney Crosby, Matt Duchene and Nathan MacKinnon are all in attendance at the training sessions, which focus on individual skills and fundamentals. As for Clarkson, he’s hard at work trying to get himself back into the starting lineup.
Alfredsson Update: We’ve got a minor update on the Wings’ Daniel Alfredsson, and as a result it appears we’ve finally got something of a target date. It sounds like he’ll be taking his sweet time in deciding whether or not he’s coming back for the 2014-15 season, as he reportedly won’t be making an announcement until mid-September.
Alfredsson has been mulling retirement after a 49-point season (68 games) in 2013-14, but Detroit appears poised to move on without him if he ends up calling it a career. Both Thomas Tatar and Gustav Nyquist seem primed to fill in the gap if he does indeed leave.
Malone Outlook: Free agent winger Ryan Malone has more to worry about this off-season than finding a team. He’s currently dealing with cocaine possession charges after a traffic stop in April, and he’s due in court tomorrow.
Malone may end up pleading the charges down, even though he claims he has no idea where the cocaine came from.
Provided he can escape punishment, Malone figures to catch on with a team somewhere; It’s simply a matter of when.
