TV:

Although we haven’t seen a ton of major transactions, it has been a pretty steady week for the NHL off-season. With that in mind, let’s take our daily look around the league and see which players and teams are in the news right now as we cruise toward the training camp season and the eventual 2014-15 campaign. Here’s the latest.

Schultz Deal: The Oilers were active yesterday, inking defenseman Justin Schultz to a one-year, $3.8 million deal. He was a restricted free agent.
Schultz posted 11 scores and 22 helpers during the 2013-14 campaign. That said, it’s believed he’s capable of much more on the offensive end. The Oilers will be looking for more production from him during this coming campaign.

Gomez Outlook: This week, we got a peek into the potential future for forward Scott Gomez. He’ll be attending the Devils’ training camp in order to try out for the team. He’s got a history in New Jersey, since he was their first-round pick in 1998 and played on the Cup-winning squads in the 2000 and 2003 campaigns. Since then, he’s played for the Rangers, Canadiens and Panthers.
Gomez ranks sixth in Devils history with 334 assists and 450 points. It’ll be interesting to see if he still has enough in the tank to contribute this season.

Wild Net Situation: Minnesota’s goalie situation heading into the 2013-14 year is certainly, well, wild. The team will carry three net-minders into training camp. Josh Harding, Niklas Backstrom and Darcy Kuemper will all be present and vying for what’s been called a “wide-open” No. 1 goalie job.
All three guys could be capable anchors if they stay healthy. Harding posted an 18-7-3 record but left in December due to difficulties surrounding his multiple sclerosis; Backstrom is coming off an abdominal injury; Kuemper sustained a concussion late in the season and had to sit in favor of Ilya Bryzgalov (who isn’t with the team anymore).
It should be evident pretty quickly as far as which guy the team is leaning toward. We’ll keep you posted on the battle once training camp kicks off.

NHL Daily Schedule: The league action will be picking back up again on Wednesday, October 8. Let’s check out the schedule for that evening and see what we can expect on opening night.
