TV:

We’ve seen a steady stream of NHL news this week, which is a nice thing to experience during a dull off-season. That said, let’s take our daily look around the league and see which players and teams are making headlines out there as we patiently wait for the 2014-15 campaign to begin.

After turning down a KHL offer, right winger Nino Niederreiter is rumored to be close to re-signing with the Minnesota Wild. He’s a restricted free agent, and should be tied up by the time camp starts.

The Predators’ Pekka Rinne is feeling healthy after his hip surgery last year. He missed out on almost four months’ worth of action due to his injury and finished with a disappointing 2.77 GAA and .902 save percentage. He’ll be fighting off Carter Hutton for the No. 1 spot this year.

The Blue Jackets and Ryan Johansen aren’t quite close to a new contract just yet, but at least they’re planning on talking. Johansen’s camp will be meeting with the team this weekend and attempting to bridge the $3 million dollar gap that is currently separating an agreement.

39-year-old center Saku Koivu announced his retirement from the league yesterday. He had shown some desire to come back to the ice this off-season, but didn’t get much interest on the free-agent market. He posted 832 points in his 1,124 games over the course of 18 years in the NHL.

Red Wings defenseman Jonathan Ericsson says his hand isn’t quite 100 percent just yet, but he’ll be ready to go for the 2014-15 campaign. That’s great news for Detroit, who really need him to be a contributor this year. He was hurt back in March.

NHL Daily Schedule: The league action will be picking back up again on Wednesday, October 8. Let’s check out the schedule for that evening and see what we can expect on opening.
