NHL Daily Updates: Checking in on the Latest News, Off-Season Schedule and More
September 13, 2014
It’s been a pretty busy week for NHL off-season news, which has helped us to keep our minds off the fact that there’s still no hockey right now. That said, let’s take our daily look around the league and see what’s going on out there right now. Here’s the latest.
The Devils’ Ryane Clowe seems to be getting closer to 100 percent. He’s been skating with the team this week in his comeback from last year’s concussion.
If all goes well at Clowe’s visit to the concussion specialist early next week, he may be able to gain clearance for full contact by the time training camp rolls around. The bad news is that he’s got three or four total head injuries on his résumé over the past year or so, and each one makes it harder to recover fully.

The Maple Leafs will be giving former Sabres defenseman Henrik Tallinder an official tryout this month. According to sources close to the team, Toronto’s defensive deficiencies will make it plausible for him to find a spot on the squad. Tallinder posted 10 points in 64 games last year in Buffalo.
Will left winger Jonathan Drouin catch on with the big club this year? It’s starting to look that way, as he’s already gaining immense praise from his teammates. Drouin was sent down after training camp last season, and seems determined not to repeat that scenario in 2014-15. The buzz is strong here, so he’ll be a key player for Lightning fans to watch as the season inches closer.
In other Bolts news, Leland Irving will be attending camp on a tryout basis. He was in Finland last year.
Despite some solid numbers in his most recent season, there doesn’t appear to be much room for Irving within the organization. We doubt this will amount to much.
Speaking of the Lightning, Valtteri Filppula is looking good so far during the informal workouts. He’s reportedly over his lower-body injury and should be 100 percent heading into the season. Filppula should be able to post some strong numbers on the second line this year.
