We’ve got just two more days to wait before the official start of the 2014-15 NHL season. That’s great news for us hockey fans, and the anticipation is high. While we’re waiting on those pucks to drop, let’s take a closer look at some of the notable players around the league and see who’s making headlines.

The Blue Jackets made some injury reserve moves yesterday, so let’s take a closer look at their transactions and see what’s happening there.
Nathan Horton, Sonny Milano, Boone Jenner and Ryan Murray were placed on IR yesterday by Columbus. Horton has a back issue and no real timetable for a return; Jenner is supposed to be out five weeks with a hand injury; Murray has a hurt knee and Milano has a face injury. He’ll most likely be heading to juniors this year.

NHL News: Player News and Updates for 10/6/14

According to sources close to the team, the Blues will be placing center David Backes alongside Patrick Berglund and TJ Oshie on the top line when the season opens up. The three of them seem to work well together and should bring some nice offensive success to the team in the early-going.

In other Blues news, Alexander Steen will ride with Paul Stastny and Vladimir Tarasenko as the season opens up. If these three can get some chemistry going together, Steen may hit 30 goals once again and Stastny will serve as a great setup man.

The Capitals’ Nicklas Backstrom will once again be centering the team’s top line. He had an up-and-down year, but ended up leading the NHL in power-play points with 44 and showed he’s still got quite a bit left in the tank.
Backstrom probably won’t ever hit 100 points again, but he’s got a lot of value in his current position and should serve the team well in 2014-15.

The Blackhawks sent center Peter Regin down to AHL Rockford. He’ll be a depth call-up if needed.

Matthew Lombardi (Rangers) and Kevin Porter (Red Wings) were both placed on waivers yesterday. If both end up clearing, there’s a reasonable chance either could earn an injury call-up at some point.
