NHL Daily Updates: Checking in on the Latest News, Daily Schedule and More
October 7, 2014
The NHL’s 2014-15 season begins tomorrow, and for hockey fans there’s no better time. While we’re waiting on those first (official) pucks to drop on the regular season, let’s take our daily look around the league and see which players are making headlines out there right now.
According to sources close to the team, the Leafs’ Cody Franson is not going to be playing in tomorrow’s season opener against Montreal. That said, he doesn’t seem to be that far away from being 100 percent following his knee injury, as he’s been doing some skating on his own during practice sessions.

The Bruins assigned defenseman David Warsofsky to the AHL yesterday. He’ll be a depth call-up when the big club gets hit with the injury bug.
Calgary’s Markus Granlund was able to skate yesterday, which is a good sign in his recovery from a concussion. There are still a few hurdles for him to cross before he’s ready for contact, however.
Granlund is a key piece in the Flames’ future plans; He’s coming off three points in seven games last year.
The Rangers put center Derek Stepan on long-term injured reserve yesterday, meaning he’ll be out for at least the first ten games. Once his leg heals, he’ll be the top center on the team once again.
Minnesota’s Justin Fontaine was able to practice with the team yesterday. He’s on injured reserve with a groin issue.
Fontaine was initially diagnosed as missing a few weeks, but this recent practice time could mean that he’s getting healthy quicker than anyone anticipated. He’s coming off a nice 21-point year in 2013-14.
According to sources close to the Capitals, right winger Tom Wilson might not be ready to hit the ice until next month. He’s still recovering from off-season surgery and isn’t progressing as quickly as the team had planned.
