The Montreal Canadiens and Washington Capitals will play Thursday night at the Verizon Center.
This is a back-to-back game for the Montreal Canadiens, who defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs Wednesday night, 4-3. Montreal scored at least one goal in all three periods and received a very aggressive game from P.K. Subban, who had five shots on goal and ended up scoring a goal in the third period to break a 2-2 score. The Canadiens offensive firepower was on full display, but goalie Carey Price also did a fine job himself by saving 24 of 27 shots and holding the Maple Leafs scoreless in the second period. With no rest and the travel, it’ll be interesting to see if the Montreal Canadiens can come with the same energy and produce a similar performance on the road.

This will be the season opener for the Washington Capitals, a team that’s coming off a disappointing season last year. The Capitals experienced some major changes in the front office and clearly expect to make the playoffs as long as Alexander Ovechkin is leading the team. With Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom leading the way for another season, there’s truly no reason why Washington can’t compete for a playoff spot this season. One key for the Washington Capitals success this year will come down to how goalie Braden Holtby matures after struggling a bit last season with a save percentage of .915. The Capitals have two very strong forward lines and a group of defensemen that play as a team and have the potential to be a very solid group when playing together.
The Capitals are 4-1 in their last 5 overall and 3-8 in their last 11 vs. Eastern Conference. The Canadiens are 2-10 in the last 12 meetings, while the road team is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings.
There's no line on this game just yet, but I'm taking the Capitals in their season opener. Montreal is coming off a tough win with no rest and Washington will be eager to get this season started on the right foot. Regardless of the line, Washington is the play.
