NHL Daily Updates: Checking in on the Latest News
We’ve got four NHL matchups coming our way starting this afternoon, and in the meantime there’s plenty to talk about after yesterday’s heavy schedule of action across the league. With that said, let’s take our daily look at the headlines and see who everyone’s talking about this morning.
Niklas Svedberg, G, Boston Bruins: Svedberg is smiling this morning after a red-letter day yesterday. He posted his first career shutout against the Sabres, en route to a 4-0 victory at First Niagara Center. Svedberg logged 32 saves in the effort.
He was aided on offense by Dougie Hamilton, who had a goal and an assist, and on defense by the rock-solid Dennis Seidenberg. Zdeno Chara also had a goal to complete the stellar showing by the Bruins on that side of the ice.

Jonas Gustavsson, G, Detroit Red Wings: Let’s move on to another net-minder who deserves some credit this morning. Gustavsson managed 30 saves in a nail-biter of a game against the Maple Leafs yesterday. The shutout matchup ended on Henrik Zetterberg’s goal with just 10 seconds left in overtime for a 1-0 victory that completed the home-and-home sweep by Detroit.
It was Zetterberg’s second consecutive big game. He had four assists in the team’s last outing.
Logan Couture, C, San Jose Sharks: The Devils’ home opener didn’t quite go as planned with the Sharks offense humming along so smoothly. Couture logged a goal and two assists in the 4-2 victory, with left winger Patrick Marleau adding a score and a helper of his own.
The Sharks were up 3-2 in this one at the 12:10 mark in the third after a pair of Devils goals, but were able to hold on and log the decisive goal on a Joe Thornton empty-netter late in the period.
Claude Giroux, C, Philadelphia Flyers: The Flyers-Stars matchup yesterday certainly had its share of thrills. Dallas was up 4-2 at the end of the second period, when Philly stormed back with a pair of goals to tie things up. The teams traded scores to send it to OT, and Giroux posted the game winner at 2:49 in the extra period. He also had an assist.
Jason Spezza (goal; three assists) and Tyler Seguin (four assists) also had monster games in the losing effort.
